2011 Builders’ Ball Committee Announces Charity Beneficiaries
Washington, DC – The Builder’s Ball Organizing Committee is proud to announce the selection of three worthy charities as beneficiaries of the 2011 Builders’ Ball.
The ball will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the National Building Museum. The Builder’s Ball has been held approximately every two years since 1996 and brings together the Washington, DC area construction, design and real estate community to raise funds for charities providing housing, shelter, and education and training programs to the metro Washington community. Since its inception, the Ball has distributed $1,210,000 in net profits to these area charities.
The following four charities have been selected for the 2011 Builders’ Ball:
Community Residences (CR), Inc. of Chantilly, VA
CR provides residential support services that enable individuals with a wide range of disabilities to live as independently and with as high a quality of life as possible. Their project is to renovate “Lake Jackson,” one of CR’s tenured group homes. Renovation of the home will allow CR to increase capacity to six residents from its current four, ensuring the long-term financial viability and success of Lake Jackson.
Georgia Avenue/Rock Creek East Family Support Collaborative - Washington, DC
The Collaborative’s mission is to work with community-based organizations and residents to help children, youth and families become healthy by choice, empowered by knowledge and connected to community support. With support from the Builders’ Ball, they will renovate the attached, unfinished garage located at the rear of one of their properties on Georgia Avenue. Currently, the space is being used as a makeshift distribution center where volunteers hand out educational supplies to residents in need. The renovated space will expand the Collaborative’s capacity for holding flexible programs, allow them to operate the distribution center year-round and allow the residents the opportunity to gain workplace experience.
Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic - Arlington, VA
Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic (formerly Vanguard Services Unlimited) is a community-based organization offering high-quality treatment to individuals and their families suffering from the effects of substance abuse with the intent for them to become healthy, productive and self-sufficient citizens. Their project is to renovate and upgrade the facility for their Boys Recovery Lodge program for adolescent boys. The renovation will provide for a more functional and attractive school classroom for the 16 residents and teacher as well as an enhanced lounge area to provide more comfortable living space for recreational and counseling activities.
Washington Architectural Foundation - Washington, DC
Washington Architectural Foundation provides education and resources to build a better Washington, DC. Foundation volunteers provide hundreds of hours of service in DC neighborhoods and schools each year. The Foundation also supports the CANSTRUCTION program held yearly to assist in donating food to the Capital Area Food Bank. CANSTRUCTION is a design competition in which teams from the architecture/engineering/construction industry build fanciful structures out of canned goods. These structures are on display for a week and judged. After the judging, the structures are taken apart and the cans and boxes of food are donated to the Capital Area Food Bank.
Through generous sponsorships and donations from the construction, design and real estate community, the Organizing Committee is pleased to provide financial support to these three organizations and is looking forward to dedicating our 2011 Ball to their efforts.
